I did not plan to write and produce a song today about the tragic and very tender subject of 9/11, but the inspiration unexpectedly came. Because it is a modern representation of the values upon which our nation was founded, I feel it belongs here.
As we reflect on the events of September 11, 2001, this new piece serves as a tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices and courage witnessed that day and in its aftermath, as well as the enduring spirit of unity that emerged in our country from this very dark hour.
Day of Remembering
On this day of remembering the terrible tragedy
an unprovoked attack of unimaginable cruelty
We honor those who gave the last full measure
in so many sacrifices made in selfless acts and efforts
Forever redefining our understanding of valor and courage
What did we learn from that day
which indelibly changed our nation?
In the immediate aftermath
of senseless horror and inhumanity
Citizens of every stripe came together
united in both grief and solidarity
It was a miracle of national resilience
a powerful display of genuine community
On this day of remembering the terrible tragedy
an unprovoked attack of unimaginable cruelty
We honor those who gave the last full measure
in so many sacrifices made in selfless acts and efforts
Forever redefining our understanding of valor and courage
What did we learn from that day
which indelibly changed our nation?
The cost in lives exceeded Pearl Harbor
the beginning of another war
that shattered our nation’s peace
But after many years of sacrifice
we and our allies finally triumphed
forging lasting bonds of powerful unity
On this day of remembering the terrible tragedy
an unprovoked attack of unimaginable cruelty
We honor those who gave the last full measure
in so many sacrifices made in selfless acts and efforts
Forever redefining our understanding of valor and courage
For those who lived and were aware
of what happened on that day of infamy
The events of nine eleven
are now a sacred memory
But to a third of those within our nation
it is only known as a terrible event in history
What did we learn from that day
which indelibly changed our nation?
That day and its aftermath is something
that must never fade from our collective memory
Something we should always honor
remembering the national unity that was achieved
in the blazing fires of adversity
Like a phoenix we arose from dusty ashes
more committed to protect and defend
our foundations of security and liberty
Something that our nation needs
perhaps more now
than ever before
